Swimwear To Suit Your Body Shape

Summer is in full swing, and that means beach season. Whether you frequent the Hamptons or prefer the pond park, everyone enjoys grabbing some sun now and then. Depending on your body type, swimsuits can be extremely frustrating to shop for. And on top of that, you want to keep trends in mind and remember which colors are best for you. Our NYC stylists have compiled some tips to keep in mind when searching for your next swimsuit, taking the stress out of shopping.

Thin or Rectangle

With minimalistic and streamlined trends in stores right now, it’s easy to get discouraged when looking for the perfect swimsuit for a thin or “boyish” frame. To achieve curvier, more feminine look, look for swimsuits that have a bit of added volume at the bust and hips. Ruffles and fringe can help create the illusion of a curvy frame. You can also search for intricate details like lace-up sides or monokini cutouts. And while you don’t necessarily need padding in your swimsuit, it does add a bit of sexy shape. Not into the girly details? Try an off-the-shoulder swimsuit. It gives the illusion of a slightly larger top (and you avoid unsightly tan lines. Bonus!)

Athletic or Inverted Triangle

Advertisements seem to think that athletic girls only want to wear athletic-style swimwear. That’s not the case! Feel feminine and beautiful in streamlined silhouettes on top and a bit of extra volume on bottom. Triangle bikini tops or deep plunges are the way to go if you like a minimal look. If you prefer something a bit more girly, opt for a sweetheart neckline. High waisted bottoms paired with bikini tops give you a curvy appearance and balance out the inverted triangle shape. If that’s not your style, try out a bikini bottom with ruching or multiple straps on the sides.

Curves All Over or Apple

Ladies, bra-style tops are your best friends. Take the time to find an underwire brand that you love, and stick with it. Many brands who specialize in this type of fit also automatically offer you other benefits – thick straps for more support, high backs to avoid any bulge, and tummy control tops to streamline the silhouette. If your chest is a bit smaller in comparison to your midsection, look for sexy pushups. Not only does this give you the illusion of a fuller bust, but it also draws attention upward. And when in doubt, look for the wrap-style swimsuit. No matter your frame, a tummy control wrap silhouette is going to make you look sexy and put together.

Curvy or Hourglass

Unlike some other body types, hourglass women don’t have to worry as much about creating the right proportions. That being said, many of these women don’t know how to highlight favorite parts of their bodies, and end up hiding under towels or coverups. Show off that tiny waist with a wrap-style one piece, or a high waisted bikini! Because many hourglass women struggle with size discrepancies between top and bottom, sometimes they don’t know which size to get. When this happens, our NYC stylists suggest going with the smaller size. Swimwear expands when it gets wet, and there’s nothing flattering about sopping excess fabric.
